Game of Thrones

Aug 23rd @ 5:14pm EDT

I recently started watching the TV series Game of Thrones ... and I realized in the spread of all events and the storm of plot emotions, when we watch a movie or TV series, we sometimes do not notice interesting phrases and thoughts that the author might want to convey to us ... here are some interesting phrases from TV series Game of Thrones that I liked .... 1) I would rather believe the eyes of an honest man than what everyone knows. 2) People always demand the truth, but they rarely enjoy it. 3) I am not offending your honor, Lord Janos. I deny its existence. 4) We had stupid kings, villainous kings, but stupid villains ... 5) What is is easily confused with what should be. Especially if the former is beneficial to you. 6) Sometimes a very small person casts a very large shadow. 7) Sometimes words can accomplish something beyond the power of swords. 8) The Lord of Light wants enemies to be burned, the Drowned God wants to be drowned. Why are all gods such cruel brutes? Where is the God of fucking and guilt? 9) We are only human, and the gods made us for love. This is our great gift and at the same time it is our great tragedy. 10) Brothels are a better investment than ships. In my opinion. Whores rarely drown. 11) Singers love nothing more than the sound of their own voices.

Be like water

Aug 6th @ 5:33pm EDT

Be like water. It is the most malleable substance on earth, but it wears away even the hardest stone. Having no shape, water can take any shape: in a cup - the shape of a cup, in a vase - the shape of a vase, bending around the stems of flowers. In a teapot, it becomes a teapot. Observe how the water adjusts. If you squeeze the wineskin tightly, water will flow out of it quickly; if you squeeze it lightly, it will flow slowly. It may seem that the water is sometimes contrary to nature and flows up the slope, but in fact it chooses any path open to it to the sea. Moving quickly or slowly, water is adamant, and its purpose and destiny are unchanged.

All or nothing

Jan 25th @ 5:30pm EST

One person came to the sage and asked: "what is love?"The sage said,' Nothing.' The man was very surprised and began to tell him that he had read many books that describe how love can be different, sad and happy, eternal and fleeting. Then the sage replied, " Everything." The man again did not understand anything and asked: "How can I understand you? All or nothing?"The sage smiled and said," You yourself have just answered your question: nothing or everything. There can be no middle ground!»

Russian Cuisine

Jan 23rd @ 2:47pm EST

Russian CuisineOlivier salad Olivier salad is a traditional salad in Russian cuisine, which is also popular in other post-Soviet countries, many European countries, Iran, Israel, Mongolia and also throughout Latin America. In different modern recipes, it is usually made with diced boiled potatoes, carrots, green peas, eggs, diced boiled chicken (or sometimes ham) with salt, pepper, dressed with mayonnaise.Okroshka Okroshka is a cold soup of Russian origin. The classic soup is a mix of mostly raw vegetables (like cucumbers, radishes and spring onions), boiled potatoes, eggs, and a cooked meat with kvass. Later versions that first appeared in Soviet times use kefir, or mineral water instead of kvass.Varenye Varenye or varenie is a popular whole-fruit preserve, widespread in Eastern Europe (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus). It is made by cooking berries, fruits, or more rarely nuts, vegetables, or flowers, in sugar syrup.Blini Blini are thin, flat cakes prepared from batter and cooked on a hot frying pan &'" first on one side and then flipped to cook on the other side. Blini are eaten with mushrooms, meat, jam or sour cream.Pelmeni Pelmeni are considered as the heart of Russian cuisine. They consist of a filling wrapped in thin dough. The filling can be minced meat or fish. Pelmeni are often served with sour cream (smetana).Vinegret Vinegret is a salad in Russian cuisine which is also popular in other post-Soviet states. It includes diced cooked vegetables (beetroots, potatoes, carrots), chopped onions and sauerkraut. Other ingredients, such as green peas or beans, are sometimes also added.

Where are you now?

Jan 22nd @ 5:06pm EST

Will there always be black and white stripes in life? The master smiled." At the majority. But some realized that there was something else and left their attention there." How do I know or feel this something else?" It's very simple, if you are upset, then you live in the past, if you are concerned about something, you live in the future, if you experience bliss and ease, you live in the present. The master looked into my eyes:" Where are you now?"

Scott of the Antarctic

Jan 21st @ 2:33am EST

Do you know what &'centenary&' means? It means the 100-year anniversary of something. This week is the centenary of the arrival at the South Pole of the first British explorers , led by Captain Robert Scott. The English word &'Arctic&' means the area of the world around the North Pole. The Arctic is not land, but sea &'" frozen sea. However, the South Pole is in the centre of an icy continent, Antarctica, and 100 years ago Antarctica was still largely unknown. There had been expeditions to explore some of the coastal areas, and some of these expeditions had ventured inland. But the centre of the continent, and the South Pole itself, was unexplored. No-one had ever been there.Robert Scott was born in 1868. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 13. Over the years, he rose in rank, and became an expert in naval torped000oes. In 1899, he heard that the Royal Geographical Society in London planned to send an expedition to Antarctica. Although he had no previous experience of Antarctica, he was enthusiastic about the challenges of the expedition, and he volunteered to lead it.The expedition left for Antarctica in July 1901, and spent two years in the frozen continent. It did some very useful scientific work, and a group led by Scott travelled far into the interior of Antarctica, to a point only 750 kilometres from the South Pole itself. But the extreme cold fo0rced the party to turn back, and they returned to their base a month later ill and exhausted. The expedition had come to Antarctica with very little experience of cold climates. The explorers had to learn how best to travel over the ice and snow. They had brought dogs with them to pull their sledges, but they did not understand how to use the dogs effectively. Scott concluded that, although dog sledges could be useful, the only way that men could reach the South Pole was on foot, pulling sledges containing food and tents behind them. The British government then decided that Scott&'s expedition in Antarctica was costing them too much money, so two ships were sent out in 1903 to bring the explorers back to Britain. Scott returned home a popular hero. He was promoted to the rank of captain, and was invited to visit the King. He quickly decided to make a second expedition to Antarctica, and that this time he would reach the Pole. It took a long time, however, to find the money for the expedition, and a suitable ship, and to recruit the right people to go with him.Scott&'s second Antarctic expedition set out in 1910. Things did not go well. On the way to Antarctica, Scott received news that the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen was also on his way to the South Pole. Scott&'s ship, the Terra Nova, became stuck in the ice for 3 weeks before it could reach land. He had brought ponies and motorised sledges with him to transport men and supplies, and a few dogs. One of the motorised sledges fell into the sea, as did several of the ponies. The ponies proved to be not very useful. Some of them died, and others had to be shot. Scott was now convinced that he was right &'" the only way to travel to the South Pole was to walk.In November 1911, the journey south began. Over two months later, on 17 January 1912, Scott and four others at last reached the South Pole. They found a tent, and a Norwegian flag. Amundsen had beaten them. He had reached the Pole 5 weeks earlier. Scott&'s party were heartbroken as they turned to go back to their base, 1300 kilometres away. The weather got worse and worse, and their supplies of food ran low. Cold and hunger sapped their strength. Two members of the party died on the journey. The remaining three men set up camp only 18 km from a depot where the expedition had left food and other supplies for them. They got no further, and all three died of cold on about 29 March. Why did Amundsen win the race to the Pole? The main reason was that he had previously led an expedition to find a sea route through the North-West Passage, the frozen sea to the north of Canada. He had learned from the Inuit people of northern Canada that clothes made of animal skins were the only way to keep warm in very cold climates. He also learned how to use dogs to pull sledges, and the whole of his journey to the South Pole was accomplished with dogs. Scott had been wrong to think that the only way was to walk.Nonetheless, Robert Scott remained a very popular national hero in Britain for many decades. Nowadays, experts are more critical of Scott&'s failings, and about some of the decisions he took. But his courage, and the courage of his fellow explorers, is beyond doubt. We love brave, fearless heroes in England, particularly heroes who fail. Our national football team, and our tennis players, are just like Scott &'" brave, the best in the world, except that they don&'t win.

A Parable About Poverty and Wealt

Jan 20th @ 1:52pm EST

Once upon a time Poverty and Wealth came up to a man.- Which of us is more attractive? &'" They started to ask.The man got scared and started to think &'~If I tell that Poverty is more attractive, Wealth may get angry and go away. And if I tell that Wealth is more attractive than Poverty will be angry and curse me.&' After all he found what to say:&'" While you are standing like that I can&'t find the solution. You should walk.So Poverty and Wealth began walking around. The man looked at them and said:&'" You, Poverty, look great from the back while walking away. And you, Wealth, look fine in the moment of coming.

England

Jan 19th @ 4:44pm EST

England and Great Britain are sometimes mistaken for being the same country. But in fact, England is a part of Great Britain &'" or the United Kingdom (the UK), which is more correct to say.GeographyEngland shares borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. It lies on the island of Great Britain and over one hundred smaller islands. It is washed by the Irish Sea, the Celtic Sea, the North Sea and the English Channel. Plains and low hills cover most of England, but some regions are mountainous. The climate is temperate maritime, with mild temperatures.PoliticsEngland isn&'t an independent country, it is a part of the UK. England&'s capital is London, but it has no its own government. The political structure of the UK relates to England as well (a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary system).EconomyEngland's economy is one of the largest in the world. It is also the largest part of the UK&'s economy. The most significant industries are chemical, pharmaceutical, automotive, aerospace, software industries and tourism.PopulationEngland's population is over 54 million people &'" it is 84% of the population of the UK. Most people live in London and its suburbs.CultureThe main language is English and the mostly widespread religion is Christianity. The culture of England has developed over many centuries. English architecture is stunning. There is a huge number of outstanding works of art created by Englishmen in literature (Shakespeare, Austen, Dickens, Orwell, Tolkien, J. K. Rowling etc.) and music (Purcell, Sullivan, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen etc.).

Weather in the UK

Jan 16th @ 2:10pm EST

There are a lot of people who wants to move and live in the Africa. Most of all people are even dreaming of it, but certainly they don&'t know everything about the weather in Africa. In the spring the weather is mild in some parts of Britain. It rains a lot, especially in the west and in the centre of Africa. You can never be right about the weather for a day. You can get wet through and in twenty minutes the sun appears. If you go out without an umbrella, this means it will be raining for sure.In summer the weather is better. The south and the east parts are the warmest parts. Average temperatures can reach 30 degrees on some days. At the end of summer it is getting foggy more often. In autumn it&'s windy and foggy; and it rains quite often. This season can be called neither too cold nor warm.In winter there are a few sunny days. In the south of Africa you can see blue sky sometimes. But as a rule it is very cold, and the sky is often cloudy. Especially it can be noticed in the north and east. Winter is not very pleasant in these regions.

London

Jan 15th @ 1:49pm EST

London is the capital of the United Kingdom, its economic, political and cultural centre. It is one of the world&'s most important ports and one of the largest cities in the world. London with its suburbs has a population of about 11 million people.London has been a capital for nearly a thousand years. Many of its ancient buildings still stand. The most famous of them are the Tower of London, where the crown jewels are kept, Westminster Abbey and St. Paul&'s Cathedral. Most visitors also want to see the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace (the Queen&'s home with its Changing of the Guards) and the many magnificent museums.Once London was a small Roman town on the north bank of the Thames. Slowly it grew into one of the world&'s major cities.Different areas of London seem like different cities. The West End is a rich man&'s world of shops, offices and theatres. The City of London is the district where most offices and banks are concentrated; the Royal Exchange and the Bank of England are here, too. The East End is the district where mostly working people live. The old port area is now called «Docklands». There are now new office buildings in Docklands, and thousands of new flats and houses.By the day the whole of London is busy. At night, offices are quiet and empty, but the West End stays alive, because this is where Londoners come to enjoy themselves. There are two opera houses here, several concert halls and many theatres, as well as cinemas. In nearby Soho the pubs, restaurants and night clubs are busy half the night.Like all big cities, London has streets and concrete buildings, but it also has many big parks, full of trees, flowers and grass. In the middle of Hyde Park or Kensington Gardens you will think that you are in the country, miles away. Many people live outside the centre of London in the suburbs, and they travel to work in shops and offices by train, bus or underground («The Tube»).

Parable: Don't let your dream be stolen

Jan 14th @ 4:31pm EST

When Monty was 16, they asked him to write an essay about what he wanted when he grew up. Monty suffered for a long time and spent many hours describing his dream. He wanted to be a rancher someday. He wrote seven pages, describing in great detail the 200-acre ranch, and drew a plan of all the buildings, stables, and roads. He even drew a very detailed plan of the house he will build with an area of 4,000 square feet. The next day, Monty gave his essay to the teacher. Two days later, his teacher returned the essay with a bold red two, adding: "Stay after class." After the lesson, a boy with a dream came up to the teacher and asked why he received a deuce for his essay. To which the teacher replied: "Because such a dream is not feasible for a boy like you. You need a lot, a lot of money to buy a ranch like this. What kind of money do you have? What. You come from a very poor family. There is no way for you to fulfill your dream. It is not feasible. That's what I'll tell you. Go home and write another essay in which you describe a different, more realistic dream, and I will give you a different grade." The boy returned home and asked his father for advice. And here's what he heard: "Son, I'm afraid I'm not your assistant here. I think it should only be your decision, and I have a feeling that it will be a really important decision for you." Monty pondered his father's words for a week. Finally, he returned the same essay to the teacher and said: "You can keep the deuce, but I keep my dream." Time passed, Monty graduated from school long ago, became an adult. He told the story and, turning to the group of people who were listening, said, " I told you this story because you are all sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre ranch. And that essay hangs in a frame over the fireplace." Monty continued: "The most amazing part of this story is that two years ago, in the summer, the same teacher brought 30 students here, and they camped on my ranch for a week. Before leaving, the teacher said to me: "Listen to Monty, I can tell you about this now. When I was your teacher, I was a kind of dream thief. I'm sorry now that I stole a lot of chi1dren's dreams back then. But I am very glad that you found the courage to stand up for your dream." Don't let anyone steal your dream. Whatever you are told, follow your heart!

Getting a Job

Jan 12th @ 4:52pm EST

Getting a job is a very hard period in the life of most people. Companies choose an employee from hundreds of candidates according to special rules, that is why there are special "typical" factors, influencing on employer&'s choice. Among such factors are: age, sex, experience, family background and marital status, personality and references. If you are to go to an interview tomorrow, sleep well before it and do not forget your CV at home &'" is the basic rule. Moreover, there are some recommendations, which can help you. For example, read annual report, or a newspaper of the company to show your understanding of the corporate strategy on the interview. What is more, you should choose corresponding dress code for the interview. Even such advices are to help you make a good impression; some companies do not want to hire a man, who follows every advice. To illustrate this, I can quote Artemiy Lebedev, the most famous Russian web-designer: "If you enclose a standard stupid resume, written by the rules of American bureaucracy, we would delete it immediately after receiving. If your CV is composed according to all rules, we would not choose you, as we might think, that your profession is to acquire a job".After getting a job, you may have some unexpected troubles with boss, too: e.g. if you dye your hair or wear something not appropriate. The best solution of such situation is to ask a trade union for advice, which can always help you in your fight with an employer. Of course, if you affect company discipline not coming in time or working badly, your dismissal would not be unfair. To conclude, I can say that it is sometimes hard not only to get a job, but also to work in the staff, and if you do not want to be laid off, you should follow company rules, it is a must.

Wise old man

Jan 11th @ 6:26pm EST

There is a very old and wise parable that helps us understand the conditionality and subjectivity of our mind and such concepts as good and bad and completely abandon judgments:There was an old man in the village, very poor, but even the kings envied him, for he had a fine white horse. The kings offered him an unprecedented price for a horse, but the old man always said:"This horse is not a horse for me. He's a person. How can I sell a person, sell a friend? The old man was poor, but he didn't sell a horse. One day he discovered that the horse was not in the stable. The whole village gathered, and the people said:"You old fool! We knew that one day the horse would not be there. It would be better to sell it. What a misfortune."Don't go too far in saying that. Just tell them that the horse is not there &'" " the old man replied. &'" That's the fact, the rest of the judgment. Whatever it is, misfortune or blessing, I don't know, because it's only a fragment. Who knows what will follow?People laughed at the old man. They always knew he was a little crazy. But after 15 days, one night, the horse returned. It wasn't stolen, it just escaped into the wild. And that wasn't all. He had brought a dozen horses with him. Again people gathered and said:"The old man is right. This is not a misfortune. Now it is clear that this was a blessing."You're going too far again. Just say the horse is back ... who knows if it's a blessing or not? the old man answered calmly. "It's only a fragment. You have read one word in an expression &'" how can you judge an entire book?People didn't say much this time, but inside they decided he was wrong &'" twelve beautiful horses! The old man had an only son who began to ride these horses. Just a week later, he fell off his horse and broke both legs. People gathered again and again judged:"You've proved yourself right again!" This misfortune. Your only son has lost his legs, and at your advanced age he is your only support. Now you're even poorer than you were."You're obsessed with judgment. Don't go that far. Just tell me your son broke his legs. No one knows whether it is a misfortune or a blessing. Life comes in bits and pieces, and more &'" we are not given. It so happened that in a few weeks the country went to war, and all the young men joined the army. Only the old man's son remained, for he was a cripple. The whole village was shouting and crying because it was a decisive battle, and they knew that most of the young men would not return. They came to the old man and said:"You were right, old man, now it's obvious that it was a blessing. Well, your son is a cripple, but he's with you. Our sons are gone forever. The old man said again:"You continue to judge. No one knows! Just tell me that your sons are fit for the army, and my son is not. Only God knows whether it is a misfortune or a blessing.

Parable of Life: The Pauper and the Hot Stone

Jan 10th @ 4:20pm EST

A long time ago a large library burned down. Only one manuscript survived. For many years she was resting in the depths of the bookstore, and no one paid attention to her, until one day, the owner in the shop was replaced. He sifted through scrolls, books, manuscripts, and disposed of the unnecessary. Thus, this manuscript fell into the hands of a random beggar. Before lighting a fire with her to keep warm, he asked what she was talking about. It was written in the manuscript: &'The man who finds a hot stone on the seashore will find in life everything he dreamed of&' The beggar decided that he had nothing to lose, and went to the sea. And he lifted stone by stone, but they were cold, and he threw them into the sea. So went the days, weeks, months, years. And so, once, a trembling hand touched a hot stone. He picked it up and out of habit threw it into the sea.

Parable of Love: Two Princesses

Jan 9th @ 5:24pm EST

There was a lilac princess who, more than anything else, wanted to meet the prince. The prince must be impeccable. The lilac princess knew for sure. And she was so afraid to miss her prince that there was no time for simple &'blameless&' men. And she lived alone. At the other end of the street lived a purple princess who, more than anything else, wanted to meet the prince. The prince must be impeccable. The purple princess knew for sure. And she was so afraid to miss her prince that she didn&'t miss a single man, and then left, thinking that the prince should be better. These princesses were familiar and often argued: - How can you meet your prince if you spend time on everyone you meet. While you are with them, your prince will pass by, - said the lilac - And how can you recognize your prince if you do not let him go close, - said the violet. And each was confident in her innocence. Years passed, the princesses still lived without princes. And nothing could be changed. When the princesses grew old, they sat on a bench and cried because their life had passed, and the most beautiful thing about her was the expectation. &'Life is unfair to us,&' they said. &'It is you who are unfair to life,&' said the sky. &'Our main dream never came true,&' they said. &'You didn&'t find the courage to fulfill it,&' said the sky. And each remained his own. Because it was too late.
